Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
While breast growth in men is unwelcome, as many as 30-40% of men have excessive breast development due to heredity, weight gain, bodybuilding drugs, aging, or an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen that leads to overdevelopment. Some males have low testosterone or high estrogen levels, which leads to overdeveloped breasts. The condition, known as gynecomastia, results in excess breast tissue that can sag and stretch the areola. Regardless of cause, when the condition has been present for more than a couple of years, male breast reduction surgery is usually necessary to remove excess fat and tissue.
Depending on the cause of breast growth, Dr. Eko, a board-certified professional from Eko Plastic Surgery, selects the proper procedure for reversing breast growth. When the cause is due to overproduction of estrogen, he will remove dense breast tissue by making an incision halfway around the nipple and removing this tissue with fiber-optic illumination. If the excessive growth is due to fat deposits, he employs liposuction to remove fat and then compresses the chest. The result of either procedure is reduced breast size and a contoured chest.
The surgical procedures, performed an outpatient basis, usually result in swelling and require a week off work and limited physical activity for a month or so. The surgery shows immediate results, but its full effects are usually apparent within several months. While most men have some scarring, a good surgeon conceals incision lines in the natural contours of the chest.
